Long before He lifted mountains or spoke philosophy on a battlefield, Krishna's earliest reputation in Vrindavan was for something far less dignified: He was, by all accounts, an unrepentant thief of butter.

The Makhan Chor

The gopis of Vrindavan would hang their pots of freshly churned butter from the ceiling, well out of reach of a toddler, only to find them raided anyway — Krishna would climb on the shoulders of His friends, form little human pyramids, or simply charm His way into homes while the mothers were occupied elsewhere. When caught, He offered a rotating cast of excuses: the monkeys did it, He was only trying to feed the calves, or His hands were nowhere near the pot in question, despite the visible evidence on His face.

Mother Yashoda's response was rarely severe. She would scold Him, sometimes threaten to tie Him to a grinding mortar, and within moments melt entirely at His tears or His mischievous smile. The gopis, for their part, would complain loudly to Yashoda about the thefts — all the while, tradition suggests, secretly delighted that Krishna had chosen their home to raid that day.

Why Steal Butter?

Vaishnava commentators have long pointed to something deeper beneath the mischief: Krishna's "theft" was never really about the butter. It was an excuse for intimacy — a reason to enter a devotee's home, to be fussed over, scolded, and loved without formality or distance. In Vraja, devotion was never meant to be a solemn, arm's-length reverence; it was meant to be as close and unguarded as a mother's exasperated affection for her impossible child.

This is part of why the Krishna of Vrindavan is worshipped so differently from Krishna the counselor of the Bhagavad Gita — the pastimes of His childhood emphasize a relationship built on familiarity rather than awe.

What We Take From This Today

Devotees often reflect that the butter-stealing pastimes model a particular kind of devotion — one unafraid of being playful, informal, even irreverent, because the relationship underneath is secure. At our temple, these childhood pastimes are recounted often in evening classes, not as historical curiosities but as an invitation: Krishna consciousness need not always be solemn. Sometimes it looks exactly like a mischievous child sneaking into the kitchen, utterly certain of being forgiven.
